Trying to recover an A1311 iMac

I volunteer for our local hospice store working electronics and we get a steady flow of Macs and iMacs, which I'm usually able to restore to a clean build from DVD or an internet download.


Latest in line is an A1311 iMac that on initial check out powered up to the recovery screen (time machine, reinstall OS, Disc utility)


Disc utility shows a 1TB health mac partition and an approx 600M recovery partition that is locked.


I went through the reinstall route after connecting to my network, clicking through and entering my apple ID and verifying. I then got the Temporarily Unavailable message.


I called Apple support and got no further - the agent asked me to boot with command+option+R pressed, which I thought was how to get to the recovery screen in the first place.


I have a Snow Leopard DVD, which I know is good. My temptation is to use disc utilities to wipe the HDD and install Snow Leopard from that DVD, but then next step is to update OS-X to latest available (High Sierra, I think).


What is the recommended route?


My task is to maximise the value for our charity, so a little extra work that will increase the value is OK, however I'm puzzled why I can't simply follow the standard route and reinstall Lion OR replace with latest compatible OS from the web - there's no option to choose the latest available, and I think requesting Lion as opposed to the latest is the reason I'm getting the message

Sadly you can not install or run 10.6 Snow Leopard on an iMac built after 2011. Yes, I know and all part of the challenge of recovering thrift store donations - I'm not getting the usual config information from the apple icon on the recovery screen.


Is there another way of identifying which it is?


At what stage do I need to know that?

Am I correct in believing I need to use Disc Utilities to clear out that locked recovery partition before doing the installation?


Or is there a route to a latest OS internet install that I'm missing?

Thanks, that's what I've got and used previously.


Routine I've used in the past is install DVD, restart and it boots to the DVD, then sort out the HDD and install.


I guess I can then install the latest compatible (High Sierra) from the Play Store?

You need to update to 10.6.8, then go to the App Store and set it up using an Apple ID, in order to upgrade from Snow Leopard to High Sierra.


If you are going to resale the iMac, then you will need to sale it with Snow Leopard and let the new owner upgrade it using their own Apple ID.


To put it simply, all upgrades after 10.6 Snow Leopard are tied to a User’s Apple ID.

Thank you all for your help. It's worth real money to the charity that I support.


It's disappointing that the Apple rep who took my call knew none of the above and I'm essentially going to do what I thought I needed to, apart from upgrade from Snow (thanks den.thed)


I've had very good experience with Apple support going above and beyond to help me recover older computers for this purpose when I've hit an obstacle, which is much appreciated. I'll put this less good experience down as a one-off

You're welcome. Yea' a lot changed when Apple went from Install Disc's to Server Upgrades. I've been using Mac for a very long time and it's hard for me to remember the way everything worked back when. So you can't really expect much from someone at support, that hasn't been around for long or that only has a newer support documentation script to go by.

I declared victory too early


I booted it from the HDD, erased the Mac partition successfully, and tried to use the disc utility to erase the locked partition. It wouldn't unmount.


I booted from the Snow DVD, with quite a lot of drive noise and got through the first couple of clicks on the OS-X installer, selected the only partition offered, the 1TB Mac partition and got a message that it couldn't start up from that partition.


Disc Utility confirmed the DVD and that partition were both good.


I therefore used the utility to do what I've done previously, which is erase the whole HDD. This time, because I'd booted from the DVD it unmounted the locked partition and erased.


Next, I went back to the installer and it still offered and declined to use the Mac partition, so I rebooted from the DVD.


This time it would not reboot further than a folder with a question mark in it after some considerable DVD activity.


Have I taken a wrong turn along the way or unfortunately suffered an optical drive failure at the precise point I needed one?


I do have my own somewhat later iMac and USB drives that I can load the DVD onto and see if I can get this problem child cooperating and then replace the optical drive if that is the only hardware issue.


More guidance requested please!

I know I have erased the full HDD on the iMac at issue - it's showing as untitled and no other partitions, or at least did when I could last boot it off a DVD.


My challenge is now to get an OS on it with an erased HDD and an apparently misbehaving DVD

I never totally toss anything out. On one of my old 2006 iMac CarbonCopyClone backup drives, I found some instructions that I made for formatting and reinstalling after replacing the HDD in the older Mac's.


1. Boot from your install DVD or Bootable Clone and open Disk Utility.

2. Highlight the new HD in the list of drives and select the Partition tab.

3. Under Volume Scheme select 1 Partition and click on the Options... button.

4. Select GUID Partition Table in the drop down window and click OK.

5. Set the Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Apply button.

6. Once thats done then you can do a clean Install, Restore from TM or the Bootable Clone.
