Can you extend applecare after 3 years?
There is now a difference between the Applecare+ for Macs and for iDevices; for iDevices, yes you can now extend it:

For Macs - No. (Maybe they'll offer that at some point).
Sometimes you can add the MBP to your homeowner/renter insurance policy (usually for a reasonably small cost). Such policies extend beyond AppleCare because they match house-loss (burglary, fire, inconsiderate guests, etc).
These policies do not pay Apple directly for repairs ... they are standard "payment for loss" and you spend the money as you want.

...and subject to a deductible in most cases. When my son lost an iMac due to a improperly installed clothes dryer vent that filled his home office with high-humidity air, he found his deductible was US$500.
No. There may be third-party insurance but you can't do it through Apple.
I got it years ago, then let it lapse without ever making a claim.
You seem to have better advice on this front than I do.
