My battery health after having my iPhone XS for five months is 96%. Is this normal or is my battery defective

That is not a problem. Battery Health is an approximation, based on the condition of the battery and the number of charge cycles. Unless the battery health goes to 80% or below in the first year of the device, you have no problems.
