my phone has a completely smashed screen...but was still able to be used. Now all of a suddent tonight it says iphone disabled, connect to itunes

Hopefully you had an iCloud backup, or a Mac or Windows backup of your contents, but this (damaged) iPhone is headed for repair or replacement. I’d guess that the passcode input has failed and that’s triggered the “disabled” status, but the details and extent of the damage here is not known. Contact the folks at Apple Support, as a starting point.
