I took too many pics and vids (around 50 GB) so now my iPhone8 64GB is completely full

Hi everybody,

as apple support people seem to be a little bit overwhelmed w/ my problem - as I am too btw. ... - I'm trying to maybe get a solution from the apple community...

I took to many pics and vids (around 50 GB) so now my phone is completely full. cannot backup on my windows pc anymore - probs w/ the win drivers I guess but don't know really - I only had the initial free 5 GB iCloud so I bought 200 GB finally, hoping all the stuff will be transferrred to the iCloud and frees some space on the phone. Cannot install upgrade of ios 13.3 neither due to not enough space, too. ....

So finally when I had WLAN and plugged it into power supply it randomly startet to copy files to iCloud - **** yeah!!! - but actually it is soooo slow. First Question: Is that normalI? Am I not patient enough? Waiting since thursday night now it's saturday morning...

I finally contacted Aplle support and they told me to first start a backup (last successful on in September....). It is still runnning after like 15 or more hrs. I stopped it by mistake and restarted it, currently it tells me 2 hrs to go (don't really believe that....yesteerday it started w/ 2 minutes ending up with 18 hrs .....) and still there are maybe just 15-20 % of my pics/vids in the iCloud.....

So sorry for the long post, final question: any advise out there how to speed things up in any way??

Thaaank youuuu!!

Best regards flo

Hi again,

finally - the upload is up and running, only like around 10% left and still ongoing.

Here' what I did:

  • have tons of patience
  • start a backup of the phone to icloud
  • restarted the backup several times (as it stopped unintendedly moreoften
  • freed some space by finally changing a setting for photos regarding iCloud upload and keeping them on the phone after backup finally succeeded (don't know the option's name in english, my phon lang is german, sorry...)
  • re-initiated iCloud drive (which I suspended due to an advise from apple support)
  • installed the iOS update (yippieh!)
  • after all that some space was freed - **** yeah!
  • upload to iCloud is running in acceptable speed

Thanks to everybody who tried to help with this issue!!

Best regards

Try this:

  • Download them On a Mac:

So are you able to download them to your Mac? Use a Mac (a friend’s?). Maybe it would work).

  • Drag-and-Drop to your Windows Desktop:

Or can you drag-and-drop them to your PC’s Desktop.

No worries...

Transferring all this Data:

End the data upload from your iPhone to iCloud, and connect the iPhone to your PC. Upload these Photos to iCloud, once they've all been downloaded to your PC.

You are welcome.

No. Perform Transfer Manually.

For Note: Use an External Hard Drive for the Storage. Make sure it is os SSD (Solid State Drive) -- it has no moving parts, therefore is less prone to failure. Moreover of importance, it has a faster data transfer rate.

So, Perform the Following, in the Order Provided:

1. The Speed is Not Normal: As for speed, being this slow is not of normality. Each photo would be 2-5MG whereas videos highly vary, both depending on the resolution and length, respectively. So, you could stop the transfer, and then just re-transfer it all over "a bunch" at a time (Step 4)

2. Use End Task in Task Manager: Press: [ctrl + alt + delete] and then select Task Manager. Select anything eating up your CPU percentage and your RAM percentage, and anything not responding. The click End Task.

3. Update iTunes and your PC: See if that makes a difference. Bugs are often fixed, and this may be one of them.

4. Attempt a New Transfer: Start by transferring only the photos. Then transfer the videos.

Operating system is Win8 Version 6.3 build 9600 - sorry for not using win10 ;)

"currently nothing happens on the iCloud since yesterday evening....even w/ backup running (at least the iPhone tells me it is)....[...]."

You might want to pause the Photos app from syncing with iCloud on your phone and Mac. Once downloaded, transfer it to an external drive. That would save you all this storage space.

Update: Currently it is uploading to iCloud again after I stopped the backup and rebooted the phone. Then restarted the backup.

Maybe I just have to repeat and repeat and repeat that if it stops again until all the pics are in the iCloud?!

Not very comfy but if that works it's worth the try even if it takes days/weeks...

Guess memory management is perhaps something that could be improved in the iPhone (8) if it comes to eating more memmory than is good for the phone's health....I'm afraid 64 of 64 is not really good to be allowed.....

Love and Peace,

flo
