Good afternoon,
I am trying to import photos from my Nikon D3200 DSLR to my iPhone 7 via lightning to USB adapter. My iPhone is recognising that there is a device connected however I’m continually met with a “no photos to import” message.
There are photos showing on the playback feature on the camera but none seem to be transferring.

While I'm not too familiar with the process, perhaps you have RAW photos only on your camera that is not compatible file format to view on your iphone.
You can import them to a PC / Mac and then Sync to iPhone.
If you have a Mac then you can AirDrop these photos from Mac to iPhone.
Photos and videos that you sync from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes can't be imported back to your computer.

Settings on camera currently set to JPEG however after reading another thread, there was a suggestion of changing format to RAW. Have tried that too but still no luck...

Is there a technical reason as to why the photos are not being detected on the iPhone?
