Force HRV measuremnt

I'm trying to track my HRV (not to be confused with HR) for training purposes? Every morning when I wake up I use the breathe app to get a reading. However, some mornings the watch automatically records a reading before I get up. This reading tends to be very low and I don't deem it accurate for comparison. The problem is when this happens I can't get the watch to take a reading using the breathe app once I get out of bed. This is proving to be very frustrating. Is there a consistent/reliable way to get an HRV measurement at any time I want? I'm using the series 3 apple watch and an iphone 8 running ios 13.3

Greetings, onetalldillon.

Thank you for consulting the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you have some questions regarding your heart rate. I’m happy to help however I can.

"The optical heart sensor can also use infrared light. This mode is what Apple Watch uses when it measures your heart rate in the background, and for heart rate notifications. Apple Watch uses green LED lights to measure your heart rate during workouts and Breathe sessions, and to calculate walking average and Heart Rate Variability (HRV).” Your heart rate.
