Nov 1, 2011 7:26 PM in response to varjak pawby shadofax31pearson,Apparently not, Dave, since it has been over 10 months as you so astutely pointed out, and Apple has no response.... After 10 months.

Nov 23, 2011 8:34 AM in response to Sleeptiteby JJordanthesailor,The free program Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ will open iBooks and allow you to read them on your Mac, it provides the added benefit of converting many eBook formats to ePub so that you can import them into iTunes and sync with your iPhone and iPad.
Use the connect/share button in Calibre to connect to iTunes which will allow you to:
- read books in your iTunes library
- import books from iTunes to your Calibre library for safe keeping
- export books to iTunes
- shop several (lots) of other book stores ( including many free) for books and then export them to iTunes
Calibre is not the prettiest program but it is the most effective way I have found to organize my 4,500 eBook library. I don't think we will ever see or really want most of those functions in iTunes so Calibre is a great way to maintain a library and "lend" books to iTunes for reading on IOS devices.

That is incorrect for any paid iBook, which is what people are asking about here.
The same goes for Adobe Digital Editions.
There is no way to read purchased iBooks on your laptop, the only exceptions are books from a few publishers that do not use DRM like O'Reilly and Take Control.

Nov 23, 2011 9:01 AM in response to Tom Geweckeby JJordanthesailor,You might be right as I never buy DRM'd books. Free books from the iTunes store worked just fine, maybe I'll buy a cheep book and try it.

Most people never buy anything other than DRM'd books, and these forums have many long threads for 18 months now in which they express their unhappiness at not being able to read those from the iBookstore on their Mac/PC. Instead they need to use the Kindle, Nook, Kobo, or Googlebooks apps.
Every purchase page in the iBookstore says right on it that an iOS device is required to read the book.

Since you speak for "most people" and I have nothing to add I will avoid posting anything in forums which you own.

Nov 23, 2011 9:15 AM in response to JJordanthesailorby Tom Gewecke,I apologize if you took that personally. The point I intended is that Apple has let most of its users down by failing to give them a way to read their purchased ibooks in OS X.

Nov 23, 2011 11:32 AM in response to dennisfromkenmoreby varjak paw,Adobe Digital Editions will open up some electronic books, yes. It will not open copy-protected books purchased via the iBooks app on an iOS device, which has been the specific topic of this year-old thread.

If you have an ibook which you paid money for from the iBookstore which ADE will open, please provide the title, because it does not work for me.
