Airplane Mode and other battery things..

Hello,

I was wondering, is it okay to keep my phone on Airplane Mode when I am not using it for a few hours, would it be okay to keep airplane mode on to save battery or would it damage the battery? And is it okay to charge my phone overnight to 100%? Currently I charge my phone to about 80% and I try not to let the battery drop under 20%.

Is there anything I should be worried about?

From,

Ryan

There's nothing terribly bad about it. It will simply turn off the cellular function but allow for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

I get what you're trying to do (limit the extremes of the charge range). I could theoretically extend the battery life if you could manage to keep it up, but it's a huge pain to keep that up manually. Some battery powered devices have maximum battery life settings, and that's a lot easier when it's automated. However, my personal feeling is that I'll just use the device however it's convenient, and if I need to change the battery I change the battery because it's relatively inexpensive to do so.

First - pardon my proofreading error earlier.

Apple doesn't really have any kind of published specification other than 500 cycles to 80% battery health. For that one size fits all spec it kind of lumps in any kind of partial cycles totaling to a complete cycle. Some do better or some do worse, although from reading here there is some who are downright upset that their batteries are doing worse or even just average.

But absolutely there's a rationale to a 20-80% or 40-80% battery regimen. That's kind of what hybrid car batteries have done and some have been able to operate like that for 20 years without replacement, such as with the 1st generation Toyota Prius. That's what some notebook computers can do. Tesla cars can be programmed to reduce the maximum charge level to 90%/80%/etc. and that's expected to extend the battery life. However, that's all automated with the power management system. It will automatically stop charging, or such systems will commence a shutdown at whatever the floor is. Some larger portable devices might "overprovision" the battery and then 0% is a little bit higher and 100% is a little bit lower than it could theoretically be in order to increase battery longevity.

However, I rather like using my device without worrying too much about that. I charge it up to 100% every night and have let it shut off at 0% several times. If the battery loses capacity I can replace it, and by the replacement battery is gone I'll probably be in the market for a new iPhone. I consider it a consumable part like tires on a car.
