Is Catalina required on my MacBook to connect Photos with my iPhone 8?

I just connected my iPhone to my MacBook in order to download some pics and I got message saying that software update is required on my MacBook. I don't want to put Catalina on this old machine. Is it required?


I am operating 10.14.6 on my MacBook and iOS 13.3 on my iPhone.

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.14

OK - thanks. For some reason, it started working shortly after I wrote this. I wish I could turn off these incessant attempts to get me to upgrade to Catalina. My machine is a 2012 and I am afraid of the possible negative consequences. Waiting to upgrade to a new MacBook in a year or so.
