Correct document size to fill iPad screen?

I need to create a presentation for work to be shown on an iPad. I created some test PDFs and uploaded them to iBooks using 1024 x 768 (iPad screen size) as the document measurements. Using these measurements I end up with about 1/16 of an inch on the left and right ends of the document. Am I missing something here? I've Googled, but can’t seem to find reference to any document sizes for the iPad other than the above screen size...

Mac OS X (10.6.4)

If the program you are using allows fine adjustments for the PDF documents you are creating, you can try bumping up the width pixel content from 768 to say, 790-800 to see if that helps, but if it does not allow minor adjustments, you are stuck with the 1/16 inch space on either side.

Another idea is to try other preset aspect ratios to see if the ipad rescales them for a better fit.
