Preview shows the PDF document with its formatting intact just as Adobe does. If you still desire to use Adobe for some reason, they no longer offer the old version of Adobe Reader. You now can go to the Adobe's web site and download the current version of Acrobat Reader DC and it does the same thing as before with some miner added features. It can also be updated for a fee to allow you to do a number of other things if that is needed.
Preview is usually ok for generic PDF that are sent to you — unless the PDF creation software includes content that Preview simply does understand how to display.
If you are reading PDFs with PDF/A or PDF/X standards content in them, then Preview cannot cope with those newer features, nor understands how to preserve them when you annotate one of those PDF documents, and it is autosaved.
Some PDF that are created with Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, or Adobe LiveCycle Designer for Windows may have XMP data in them requesting certain Acrobat, or Reader extensions — clearly not something that Apple's Preview can handle, but a better possibility exists using the most current Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

Not exactly. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is free and cannot be updated for fee. Adobe Acrobat DC Pro is a PDF editor and is not free.
Adobe Acrobat Reader DC's Export PDF has an optional service feature that requires signing into an established Adobe account, where one can subscribe to annual billing at $23.88 for the Adobe Acrobat Export PDF online service. This allows one to convert existing PDF into Word, Excel, or RTF files. There are other more expensive plans with considerably more features available.
www.adobe.com however why do you feel you need Adobe Reader, you have Preview pre-installed and it should suffice.
Thanks for the info. I was assuming Ronasara was saying Reader could be upgraded to Pro for a fee. Maybe I read too much into the reply.
