Delete an email account without losing contacts

Can I delete an email account without losing my contacts originally associated with that account? I back up my iphone to the cloud every night.

You are going to have to archive those contacts if they are not a part of iCloud. Check with the web access of that email account and see if something is built in to archiving contacts from there.
