No haptic feedback from keyboard in silent

When typing on my keyboard for say an iMessage or something while the phone is on loud I get the audible clicks plus the haptic feedback but when set to silent I lose the haptic feedback. Is this a fault or by design? It seems counter-intuitive that you lose all feedback from the keyboard when silent. I would still like to feel the clicks even if I can't hear them.

I actually reached out to Apple support and they told me this is by design. I'm somewhat dumbfounded by this decision as it makes no sense to include both vibration and sound and then take it all away when the silent switch is flicked. I like to know that I pressed each key. Funnily in other apps like YouTube I get haptic feedback for clicking on videos etc even in silent mode. I really feel this is something Apple should address. Surely I am not the first person to want this feature?
