Ethernet

I'm running High Sierra 10.13.6 on my iMac 18,2. The internet will only connect wifi not ethernet. I see "This computer does not appear to have any PCI Ethernet cards installed" under Hardware>Ethernet Cards. Will upgrading to Catalina solve this issue, or is there another option?

Upgraded to Catalina 10.15.2 and now no ethernet I have wifi but no ethernet. Network preferences say "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet." Does anyone know how to fix this?

It is possible that a power surge (from lighting or some other source) has zapped the chip.

At this point you have three solutions.

Get an external Ethernet adapter.
Live with only using Wi-Fi.
Take it in for repair.

Reset the SMC and NVRAM to see if those help.

Thanks for suggesting, but after reset I still have same the ethernet connection problem.
