if not, it is a scam designed to steal your information.

No it’s not. I haven’t received an emailed receipt for iTunes, or App Store purchases since October. Some of us in the ASC have been talking about this and when I did a Google search, it appears as though other users are not getting receipts either.
Furthermore, Apple never sent “thank you” emails for making a purchase. They sent purchase receipts. What you got is a scam.
Avoid phishing emails, fake 'virus' alerts, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support
They put an apostrophe in the word “thanks”! What more scam proof do you need??
