iPhone 8 home button makes a terrible noise

My wife dropped her glass iPhone 8 without her case on it. A week later her phone started to make a terrible noise when you touch the home button. It’s obvious that she isn’t the first person to experience this but I’m wondering if anyone knows what is actually wrong inside the phone or what specifically can be done to fix it (I.e. - a new home button)?
