Where do these files go when I select them and try to "add to library" in itunes? Nothing seems to happen. How to do this... Files were originally recorded on an ipod and then uploaded to itunes on a pc, but then I had a crash of my data drive...files were restored to a USB and I am loading them back up. Most files, audio and other do load up where I want them to, but not the MPEG 4 files
When you say it plays in iTunes in movies does it show video? If it does it could be the file extension is wrong and should be .mp4
It might be worth using a tool like this https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo to check what type of file and what contents it has. (It is available for both Mac and Windows.)
Something that might confuse things is that a podcast file would also normally have a .m4a file extension but can contain other tracks besides the sound. This behaviour of course would mean it would not be treated by iTunes like a normal music track. MediaInfo might reveal clues that confirm this.
A music video file from the iTunes Store would normally be a .mp4 file extension.
The file extension is .m4A audio file and yes I can play them on computer.
I first played through an app called irehearse and had then tried to add to itunes (unsuccessfully).
So now I tried playing via itunes and indeed it will, but itunes opens up in movies and plays it that way!
I imagine that tells you something
I don't know if you made any progress but here are details of another tool to try.
It is a metadata aka tag editor which can edit tags in all the file formats supported by iTunes. You should first use it to view the tags in a working file, then view the tags in a 'bad' file and compare. This might point out something which you can then edit to 'fix' the problem.

Wide thinking! However I personally recorded the original item on my ipod on an audio recorder app. There is no video. But when I get some time later I'll look into the tool you mentioned.
