disable finder drawer
I would like to disable the Finder drawer. Is that possible?

That's not actually part of the Finder but rather a third-party add-on called Default Folder X, and you can disable that in the General pane of the preferences for that app. Or to disable it temporarily click on drawer button. That's the one next to the search window in your screenshot.

Good thing you know about Default Folder. This feature never appeared until I got this new computer that came with Catalina. Thanks!
Now things make sense. FWIW, Default Folder X does not come as part of Catalina. It's something someone would have had to install. It makes me wonder how "new" the computer you bought was.
I, too, have had Default Folder forever. I used Migration Assistant when I received the brand new Mac. The "feature" that appeared was that drawer. Somewhere along the line it got enabled. It's quite possible I'm the one who enabled it, perhaps during a DF update, and forgot.
Thanks again!
That would depend on what you are calling the Finder "drawer".
The Finder drawer is the tab with the plus sign below that appears below the Finder window when it is active. This is in Catalina. If one hovers there, it is referred to as "this drawer."

Default Folder and LaunchBar are the first two things I install on a Mac :) Been using both for years and years...
