iPhone 4 Battery Life Help!

Hey guys,

I just got my iphone 4 about a week and a half ago, and after rereading some reviews about the phone i have a question to ask and am looking for some help... Anyways reading the gizmodo and engadget review alone have informed me that the iphone4 battery life is great. Engadget themselves say they went 30something hours on the phone under normal use. How long are your iphone 4s lasting? Mine only lasts a day... Like today it lasted from 7 in the morning and id at 5% as we speak.. Now thats great battery life from my previous phones but i cant help but think im not getting the whole mileage outta it. I text quite alot and played about 15 minutes of games and web brorwsed about 25 in total. The rest of the time the phone was locked! Can i exchange my iphone for a new one at the apple store? Or will i need to go back to radioshack whp never have any iphone4s in stock

Just want to let you know you're not alone. I too have had some "less than promised" battery life from my iPhone 4. When I first got it, I could have it on video pretty much all day. Now that I've had it for a little more than 3 weeks, the battery life seems to diminish a litter faster than normal. The promised 300 hours on standby don't exactly show when I've had the phone off the charger for 2 hours and I'm somewhere near 90% battery life with minimal texting and no calling.

You can try exchanging at an Apple Store, but your battery life doesn't seem all that unusual. Apple claims 7 hours for 3G internet use. That includes everything from texting to push emails. I'm not sure you're too far off. But you can try exchanging it, but I'm not sure you'll convince them. If you were getting 2 or 3 hours, I'm sure they'd do it.

Are you getting push emails? That's going to draw down the battery.

It's difficult to say because battery life will vary considerably with settings, usage, and signal strength. The figures Apple (and every other manufacturer) quote are usually absolute best case scenario in a given set of conditions - in reality most people get nowhere near the quoted figures.Based on the settings you've mentioned in your post I'd say I'm getting roughly the same time between charges as you.

Just a few suggestions for you that may help since we can't see your settings on your device. If you have the location services (in settings under "general") turned "ON" all or most of the time, this will deplete the battery life a bit quicker, so if it's "ON" keep it turned "OFF" unless you need to have it on for some apps you're running etc. Same goes for "Bluetooth". When this is the case for me, I immediately turn it back off when I don't need it to be on any longer, thus saving the battery life between charges. Another setting you can change is in your email settings for "fetch" or "push" notifications. Simply change it to a longer time frame to fetch or you can set it to "manually fetch". If you have it set for every 15 minutes as an example, this will obviously have an impact on your battery life. If you have a bunch of apps, as I do, that ask you if you'd like push notifications sent to you and you've answered yes, then these push notifications can also be turned on or off at your desire that are also found for each app that has the notifications being pushed to your device in the same location services settings. Once you've turned your location services "ON" you should also see a list of the apps with push notifications, simply turn off the ones you may not be using that frequently. When I know I'm going to be watching videos for a lengthy amount of time or some serious web browsing or game play, I just keep mine on the charger while I'm doing this, then when I'm finished my battery isn't so depleted for when I may need it later. Plus, remember we now how multi-tasking feature that we didn't have before iOS4, so we have could have some apps running in the background that is going to have some impact on our battery life. Your "Brightness" settings can also have an impact on battery life. I use mine "heavily" on a daily basis (as I have with the past with every other iPhone model) and unless I find myself in a Wi-Fi hotspot somewhere or an extremely strong 3G signal area, it's not uncommon for me to have to charge mine up at least twice a day. Battery life in my opinion is going to vary greatly among each of us because we all have settings preferences we opt to have and how much each of us use our devices and in what mode (Wi-Fi, 3G or Edge) So if you ask 20 people, you're likely to get 20 different answers. Anyway, I hope some of these suggestions may help you conserve your battery life.

Yes I do, didn't think about that, but I have noticed a difference from the first week and now the third week with the phone. I'm thinking about maybe doing a little control test, maybe fully charge it, set it on airplane mode, and set my iPod on shuffle to see how long it'll last 🙂 I guess I would also have to dim my screen as much as possible too huh... lol too many variables, I'm just gonna stick with "my phone is working fine"

ill take it to the genius bar sometime and see what i can do.
my batttery drains so quickly whenever i text. it's actually pretty annoying. i usually have text message conversations like back and forth for about 4-5 minutes and my battery immediately drops 4%. i just want to see if i can get another phone and see if this is actually an issue. 😟
