Charged for Mobile Data Abroad when the Mobile Data was turned off

I was charged for Mobile Data when I was in Canada even thou I had my mobile data turned off all the time. How is that possible?

What do I need to do next time to avoid this?

Thanks for advice!

When you turned off mobile data (assuming you also turned off data roaming) you prevented your iPhone from connecting to the internet. Note that your connection to the international cell towers for phone calls and texts was still active. Did you make or get any calls while you were in Canada? How about texts? if YES then your charges were for calls and texts.

Setting your iPhone in Airplane mode is the best option to guard against unwanted data usage, including phone calls and texts.
