I bought a new MacBook Air in November and purchased the new Microsoft Office for Mac to go along with it. Just tried to open a file I made iwth my old computer and this popped up: "user does not have access privileges" I cannot open old files.

Check the file's access settings and change them if necessary.
I think I am being most/y sympathetic because I did the same thing, except I am having no problems with Office and any related files. Did you double click on the file to try and open it? How about starting Word and trying to use File > Open to find the file and open it.
If you can view the Word document in Apple's Preview (or Quick Look) then the issue is not the Word document.
