Does apple care cover lost or stolen iwatch??

My wife purchased an Apple Watch for me a year ago and she purchased apple care +. I recently lost it but I could not locate it anymore even through the apple watch app. I called them and told them I had lost it but they said apple care + does not cover theft of apple watches. Is that true???
