My friend gave me an Apple Watch but it’s locked

my friend gave me an Apple Watch but it’s locked and she’s not around anymore and I’ve been trying to get it unlocked by trying the factory reset on the watch it self and it starts the process but then a few second the screen goes black and then it just goes back to the home screen but if I keep tapping the screen it stay on the circles going around what do I do
