Time Machine: old backups are not deleted and cannot be accessed

I have been making Time Machine back-ups from my MacBook Air to an external drive (a Seagate Backup Plus Slim) and recently started running low on space. However, Time Machine is not deleting old back ups to make room as it is supposed to.

When I ‘Enter Time Machinemy old back-ups are inaccessible. All windows apart from ‘Today’ are grey with no dates and cannot be selected. I have attached a screenshot to show you what I'm seeing.

I have been reading other posts on here from people with the same problem, and none of the answers apply to my situation, so it may be useful to take into account the following points before replying:

1. The drive was formatted exactly as instructed with OS X Extended (Journaled) and GUID Partition Map.

2. I have not attempted to delete any Time Machine back-ups manually.

3. I have not used this external drive with Time Machine on a different computer. The back-ups have always been made on the same machine.

4. I have run disk First Aid and it did not help.

5. I have not updated the OS since I started making the back-ups. I am running OS High Sierra 10.13.1

6. My MacBook Air has 121.02 GB storage capacity. My external drive has 205.43 GB space currently free.

I would be very grateful to anyone who can help me resolve this.

Thank you

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't seen a Time Machine issue mentioned in any of the updates since my current version. As you can see, it's also a pretty fundamental problem - not minor, which is why I doubt it will be fixed by updating. In fact, it could complicate the issue: I've read that Time Machine will not touch old backups made on a previous OS. That's why I mentioned the fact that I haven't updated it.

Thanks for your input, dialabrain.

For anyone else who happens to read this, the fact that there is "nothing selected" in the screenshot is exactly the problem. As mentioned above, "All windows apart from ‘Today’ are grey with no dates and cannot be selected." The windows do not respond when clicked and neither do the dates up the right hand side.

You're welcome. To be honest, in all the years I've used Time Machine I've never had occasion to view the backup folders themselves. What I can say is, on my iMac I'm on at the moment which is running Catalina, I have no problem selecting the folders or the dates.

I don't know if you have more backups if you scroll but it looks like you have no backups after Sept 2019?

Honestly, I only use TM in an attempt to help out here, so it hasn't done many backups...
