Macbook Air—Audio input not working

My Macbook Air (2014) doesn't recognise my headset mic as an audio input. How can I make this work?

I'm reliably informed that the headphone port on this Macbook is also an audio input (which supports the Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone). I don't have that particular headset so is there an adapter I can use with my own headset to make the Mac recognise the mic input? (Or any other way of making it work?)

Hey there WhistleAsTheWindBlows,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand the mic on your headset is not working with your Mac. I’ll be happy to help with this.

Have you been able to test your headset mic with any other devices and get it working? If not, that can help you isolate the issue.

Have you tried selecting the headset in System Preferences > Sound > Input? Try doing that using the steps in this link if not:

Change the sound input settings on Mac

If that doesn’t work, test this in a new user to further isolate this issue:

Let me know if this helps.

Hi WhistleAsTheWindBlows,

Thanks for the update. To verify, do you or any friends or family members have a set of Apple EarPods with a mic that you can use to test with on your MacBook Air? There are a number of accessories that may do what you want. Depending on which MacBook Air you have, you may also be able to use a USB or Thunderbolt port all. Here’s a link to the Microphones section of the Apple Store. You may be able to find what you are looking for there:

You could always go to an Apple Store or Authorized Reseller as well. They should be able to let you test a couple of headsets with your Mac as well.

Cheers.

My headset mic works with other devices.

I cannot select it in System Preferences > Sound > Input as it does not appear in the list of devices to choose from. The Macbook recognises it as an audio output, but not as an audio input (see pictures attached).

I have read on the Macworld forums that the Macbook Air only recognises audio inputs of the three-ring variety, such as Apple’s headsets. Is this correct?

If so, as my headset is the standard two-ring variety, I would like to know if there is an adapter I can purchase it to make it compatible with the Macbook.

Thanks for your reply. No I don't have a set of Apple EarPods, nor do I wish to purchase one.

I would like to know if I can use my existing standard two-ring headset, which is brand-new, with my Mac (MacBook Air, 13-inch, early 2014 model).

Is there a two-ring audio to three-ring audio adapter, or a two-ring audio to USB or Thunderbolt adapter available?

And even if so, will this Mac accept audio input from the USB/Thunderbolt ports?
