Large (6TB - 8TB) internal hard drives for Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010 High Sierra 10.13.6 (soon to be Mojave)

I am still using my classic Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010 and planning to add two high-capacity internal hard drives (6TB - 8TB). This is mostly for photography, Photoshop and stacking software.

I've read of problems with larger (6TB+) drives not mounting on restarts... only mounting from a cold start. These problems were reported several years ago and owners were wondering if this problem would go away with newer versions of macOS. So I'd like to hear of more recent experience from those with and a similar setup (i.e. cMP) and on High Sierra or Mojave.

Would you please indicate the:

  • Brand (Seagate, Toshiba,...)
  • Model (BarraCuda, X300, ...)
  • Capacity (6TB, 8TB,...)
  • Is the HDD mounting on a restart?
  • Other relevant experience

Also, I read that NAS hard drives are more reliable, but not recommended for non-RAID use. Would someone confirm whether or not that is true? Thanks!

Mac Pro, macOS 10.13
