Apple ID Trusted number changed unknowingly

Why was my trusted number with apple changed without my doing or knowledge. I am now locked out of my Apple ID because I am unaware of the trusted number on the account that I did not input or change. Nor have anyone been on my phone. I am now locked out of my apple id account. I’ve already made contact with apple also. I am told there is nothing they can do because of security reasons.
