No 3rd party security products are necessary. They will do more harm than good. The firewall and security software built into macOS is more than sufficient.
macOS is secure enough to protect your data. You do not need a security software for that.
The built-in security features of the mac would ensure that your data and identity are not compromised with.
can I control what goes in and out of my machine with the built-in firewall?
Thank you all for your very helpful responses.
Apple's built in firewall can be found in the System Preferences Security & Privacy tab. I believe it is off by default. Apple's security is pretty good and generally malware a Mac user picks up is self inflicted. Most of the vets here recommend MalwareBytes which has a freeware version. The difference between the paid and freeware versions is that the paid version works in the background - the free doesn't. I've never seen a reason to purchase the program.
