My Air Pod pros were stolen,

My air pod pros were stolen from my basketball bag in a locker room during a game I was playing. When I check "find my devices" from my phone it is showing the last known location is the locker room which is when I put them in my basketball bag. Does the person who stole them have to open the lid to ping a new location? Do I have to be in BlueTooth range to pick up the new location?
