Favorites bar in Safari is not saving

I recently updated flash on my MacBook Pro. Ever since, I am not able to save pages to my favorites folder in Safari. I have tried adding bookmarks in all the ways possible, ie, adding with the plus sign, adding with the drop down window, and even dragging folders into the favorites file. They will appear for a few seconds then disappear. Plus all of the bookmarks that were there previously are gone.

All of the other bookmarks folders and the contents haven't been affected. I have done all of the recommended troubleshooting. It is not a syncing problem, nothing on my phone or iPad has changed.

I don't know if it the flash update, but everything was fine before.

Thank you

MacBook Pro early 2013 running OS10.13.6

Try Safari/File/Export Bookmarks and save them so you have a backup copy.

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Safari/Bookmarks.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop. Then Safari/File/Import From and import your saved Bookmarks.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thank you, I did all that you suggested and still nothing will save into the favorites folder. I may have to do a software restore which is always kind of a pain because I will have to enter all of the software keys for applications I have purchased.

I've tried to reinstall Safari from previous backups in time machine, but Safari is blocked off (A circle with a line through it, like a European stop sign). I am not sure what that is all about.

I may just use Firefox. I imported all of my bookmarks to it a few months ago before this problem occurred.

Thank you for your help though!
