Apple watch syncing at awkward times

Is it possible to chose when the watch syncs to the phone? I missed an alarm because the watch started syncing an hour ago (Sunday 7pm) and it isn’t done yet. All apps are closed on the phone (except for safari right now) and I have the latest iOs updates on both the watch and phone. Bluetooth and wifi are also enabled on both devices. This is the second time that syncing is done during the day, rendering my watch unusable.
