Success!!

The SamsungPortableSSD_Setup_Mac.pkg package that was on the disk when I bought it was not compatible with Catalina. After much searching I found I had to install an update driver [ Samsung Portable SSD Software for T5, X5(2) ] which I found at:

https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/ . I downloaded and installed it, and at that point the drive became usable, however APFS was not an available format in Disk Utility when erasing.

However, this morning I discovered in my /Users/myname/Library/Application Support/PortableSSD folder an app named SamsungPortableSSD.app . I opened it and saw a notification of updated firmware. I updated the firmware and after that was done, I went back to Disk Utility, and this time when I erased it the GUID scheme became available, and after that APFS was on the format menu.

Thanks to you folks for the suggestions. I am a happy camper now.

I have already read and followed all of the instructions on all of the referenced links to no avail. APFS is not one of the available formats in my Disk Utility application.

Try again—

Apple Partition Map: Choose this option for compatibility with old PowerPC-based Mac computers.

Wow.

Nice that Samsung makes it so easy and straight forward. 😉
