Burned CDs have missing track names, and also skip.

Hello. I have an HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 10, and the most recent version of iTunes (12.10.3). I also use a Dell brand external CD drive. I've been having this problem for over a year:

When I burn music CDs in iTunes, I like to include track/artist names as metadata. My car has a touch screen that displays this information. However, almost every CD I burn has a handful of missing song titles. (But not every song - and not artist or album names) These CDs also frequently skip in two or three places.

I don't think the external CD drive is the problem, because it rips CDs just fine. I have performed an iTunes repair install numerous times and still have this problem.

Windows, Windows 10

MattL2,

If you believe it might be an issue with iTunes itself, instead of doing a repair installation, make sure to completely uninstall and reinstall iTunes:

  1. Back up and restore your iTunes library on your PC
  2. Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later

If these are the steps you've taken or are still having issues, reach out to Apple Support directly: Contact Apple Support

Take care.

Hello MattL2,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. From what I understand, burned CDs don't have track names/artists that appear, and these same CDs also skip. I'll do what I can to help.

Here are some suggestions:

Have a great day.

I will test burning at a slower speed. I am burning as an audio CD, with text enabled. Since the iTunes reinstall did not fix the issue, I am starting to wonder if my Dell external optical drive is the problem. It always rips CDs with no problems, so I don't know. I will see if I can borrow my sister's and test.

As far as a pattern, this is interesting: I compared two different albums that I burned two copies of. The first album, the first and second copy were missing different track names than one another. As for the second album, both copies were missing the exact same track names. Weird right?

Beyond that, all the songs are ALAC, either ripped from a library CD or bought and downloaded from Bandcamp. And, for the most part, none of the titles have special characters.

I appreciate the response, but I don't think any of those are the solution.

  • The discs are not scratched or smudged. I am having this problem with many burned CDs, not one or two.
  • The songs are ALAC with no DRMs of any kind. And the external burner works, for most songs. So neither of those are the problem.
  • I have tried the repair install a few times, and rebooted after every install.
  • I checked, and the CD drive does not need additional updates for drivers
  • Windows updates automatically

Argh. That didn't fix the problem. I performed a complete uninstall, then rebooted, and reinstalled iTunes. Then I re-burned an album I was having problems with. Of the 12 tracks, on my car's touchscreen only 7 or 8 display track titles ( I will include a photo below.) However, none of the songs skipped, which was also a problem I was having. I will have to burn and test more CDs to see if that specific problem is fixed.

I guess I will have to call Apple support.
