old external hard drive not supported in catalina

Can I reuse my unsupported backup hard drive after upgrading to catalina ?

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.15

So you can’t select the top-level physical device in Disk Utility (and not a partition of it), and erase and repartition the whole device? If that’s not working, is it possible that this device has failed?

The hard drive I was using for my Time machine backup says not supported in disk utilities after I installed catalina os upgrade.

Disk utilities won't let me erase or mount or restore. Is there a way to set it up to be used on Time machine in Catalina ?
