Activity Monitor, CPU usage display shows only a header and zero-body window (most of the time).

I want to see the bar graphs for the CPU cores on my machine. Option 2 in Activity Monitor gives this neat little window with a bar graph for each core (physical or virtual). Sometimes this  window appears properly, but most of the time all I get is a small window header with no useful controls and no body where the bar graph should be.

dickrubinstein,

Thanks for getting back to us. To help further isolate potential causes for this behavior, I suggest seeing if this continues to be an issue when you restart your Mac in safe mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If you're able to use Activity Monitor without issue, the next step would be to rule out incompatible login items:

If your Mac has a blue screen or other startup problems

Specifically, check out the section labeled “Test your login items”

Also, testing in another user account can help determine if this may be user or account related settings causing this issue. Here's how you can create a new user for testing:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Keep us posted with the results.

Best Regards.

Hello dickrubinstein,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that Activity monitor is not responding as expected; I'd like to help.

The first and best step is to quit Activity Monitor and then launch it again to see if that helps. If you still have issues, this article can help:

Thank you for your reply. I have repeatedly quit Activity Monitor and tried to get the CPU usage window to appear properly. Maybe one time in 10 it works. All other times, I just get an empty header with only the close button active. Since this is an Apple utility, I don’t know how to reinstall it without reinstalling the whole OS, which might help. Any other ideas? Does this window work for you reliably?
