It sounds like you took a good step in removing and readding the email account to your Mail app. When you add the account back, are you choosing the AOL option after tapping 'Add Account', to allow it to automatically fetch the mail settings? Or, are you manually setting up the account using the 'Other' option under 'Add Account'?: Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. This will just give me a better idea into how the account is being set up.
Once set up, let's have you review the account settings to see how your mail is set up to fetch new mail, as well as to see if your AOL account is setting up as POP or IMAP.
