my dad recently updated his phone and lost multiple contacts, how can he get those contacts back?

Of course, this assumes that the phone was backed up to iTunes, iCloud or both. Note that iCloud backup can be configured once and it will back up automatically every day when the phone is locked, connected to Wi-Fi and plugged in.
