Time machine trash file size is larger than the external drive

I made the mistake of trying to free up my time machine external hard drive but deleting old back ups. I selected about 15 backups. There is still two years left that I have not selected. Very Important to note; the external hard drive is 2T with 274.36 GB available. The backups moved to the trash bin on my iMac and thats when the party/problem started. The iMac has been trying to empty the trash ALL DAY. 1) I tried deleting the files in the trash bin the normal way after an hour, it was still trying to delete them, I stopped and tried the Clean My Mac app. Three hours later the space calculated in the trash bin by Clean my Mac was 2.2T more than the capacity of the external hard drive!

2) i went on line and tried the terminal commands to delete the files, all the files came up after the proper commands. It asked me my password again and denied me access. Now a command comes up password with a key but It will not accept the password.

3) all I want to do is get this stuff out of my trash bin BUT....How in the heck can the size of my deleted files far exceed the capacity of my external hard drive?

You are absolutely correct. The best I have felt and most beautiful site today was an empty trash folder when I ejected my external hard drive.

This is an old hard drive anyway, time to upgrade. I WISH I had posted this question earlier. Thanks everyone for responding so quickly!

That is the only true solution.

You’re welcome.

Personally I run 2 Time Machine backups. TM1 has been in use for several years and I started TM2 early last year. I’ve also been using CarbonCopyCloner for several years before the conception of Time Machine and have never lost a single photo or file that I couldn’t locate on more than 1 backup drive.
