New Password

I have submitted a new password for my iCloud Apple ID. It is accepted on the Apple website and takes me directly to my account. However, when I open System Preferences and it calls for my password, "Your Apple ID or password is incorrect" keeps popping up. Can anyone recommend a solution short of taking my iMac (Mojave 10.14.6) to the Apple Store?
