how to clean up applications in system report

When I view the applications listed in the system report there are applications that are listed more than once. Is there a way to clean that up? Is it a list of every install ever done on the system?

thanks

The system report draws upon existing preference files. A more accurate way to determine what is there is using http://www.etrecheck.com/

Copy the results to and from http://www.pastebin.com/

into the forum so we can tell if there is genuinely duplication.
