Migration Assistant not working

I am trying to transfer my files from an old macbook pro to a new macbook air. I have followed the steps given and updates both to macOS Catalina version 10.15.3 and mac OS High Sierra version 10.13.6 respectively. Both laptops are connected via the same wifi. When I start MigrationAssistant, the icon of my old macbook appears but then I click on it, it says on my new macbook air that the OS on my old macbook is not up to date. How do i resolve this and transfer my files to the new macbook preferably without the use of a hard drive and just migration assistant?

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15

You should not try to use Migration Assistant over Wifi, anyway. It is dog slow, if it works.

Did you use Time Machine on your old mac? Just connect the Time Machine drive to the new mac and migrate from that.

If both macs can be connected via Thunderbolt, then that ought to be pretty fast (but probably will require a TB3-TB2 adapter and a TB2 cable, if the old MBP supports Thunderbolt).

In most cases, the best way is actually with an external drive - either a TM backup or a clone of your old mac's internal.
