Since I updated to iOS 4 and now 4.01 I have not been able to open the messaging app on my iphone 3gs. In order to text I have to go to my contacts, select a contact and select "text message." Doing this pulls up a text window in which I can text the contact I selected. I can then select "inbox" to access my text inbox and message another contact or reply to message. How can I fix my "Messages" app so I don't have to work around it not opening? Thanks for any help.

What have you tried so far in the troubleshooting guide?
    Turn off and on?
    Hard reset/reboot?
    Restore from backup?
    Restore as new?

As those are what we are going to recommend here with the final option of making appointment at Apple Store.

I've turned the phone off and on, hard restarted, restored from backup, reset all settings. I have not yet restored as new & would like to avoid that if possible. This morning, the problem has become worse because I can no longer access my messages in any round about way. I just get a blank inbox screen that crashes and returns to home after 20 15-20 seconds.
