2 step verification and apple tv

We have an older model of Apple TV (10 years old). My most recent iphone forced me to enable 2 step verification in order to add a card to wallet. Ever since enabling 2 step verification, we get kicked out of apps on Apple TV (ie netflix, etc). At first we would get kicked out once or twice per movie. Now, we get kicked out every minute or two. When we get kicked out, I choose to allow the sign in (on my phone) and receive the verification code (on my phone). We also get a message from Apple TV that we need to enter the code, but when we select Ok under that message, it just pops out to the home screen with all the apps and never gives us an option to enter a verification code. I would disable the 2 step verification, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to do that on the iPhone 11. Can anyone help me find out where to enter the code on Apple TV or how to disable it on my iPhone 11?
