Bad sound quality during calls

Hi

I bought an iphone XS a month ago and I am experiencing much worse audio quality during calls then my previous phone (Samsung 5s Neo). The speech is muddy and sounds like the audio is lacking treble. It was like this out of the box. Do I need to change some settings or is there something wrong with my phone?

iPhone XS, iOS 13

Hello, magnus242.

Thanks for getting back to us with those details. Since this is only happening with calls, what is your cellular signal like? Does it happen it multiple locations?

Go to Settings > Cellular and check to see if you're using Wi-Fi Assist. If so, turn it off or if it's off turn it on and see if that helps.

You may also want to reach out to your carrier.

If none of this has helped, contact Apple Support.

Best regards.

Hi

Thank you for replying me.

I have made sure that nothing is covering the microphones at the bottom of the phone and nothing is covering the speakers. I am using the phone without any cover/cases.

I have updated to latest iOS version, and checked the carrier settings.

I also tried turning the noise cancellation on and off.

I am still experiencing the same problems. The speech sounds muddy during phone calls both through the earspeakers on the phone and also when using the loudspeakers. It seems to lack treble and there is also lot of background noise.

I dont have a bluetooth headset to check with, but I notice that when I play music through the loudspeakers the sound seems good. So its only a phone call issue.

Hi

The cellular signals vary between locations. Its usually full or three lines. Sometimes its on two lines. Never on one line. I think the quality is better when the signal is better, but even on full signal its not good. At least not as good as my Samsung s5. I have tried swapping my sim card between both phones at the same location and time for comparison.

Two days ago I was talking to a friend on my iPhone and he remarked that he could barely hear me. I could also hear that the sound quality was bad, with lots of distortions. It was on full signal at that time. I then stopped the call and changed the wifi setting. Wifi call was on during the call, so I turned it off and called him back. The sound quality was then drastically better, but I wouldn´t say it was as good as my previous phone. Shouldn´t the quality be better with Wifi call on?

I have mailed my carrier. Waiting for an answer.

Best regards

Hello, magnus242.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

From what I've read and understand is that your audio during calls sounds muddy. I'd like to help. I would start by making sure that nothing is covering the receiver. Then follow some of the steps in this article: If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker

Also, make sure your iPhone is updated along with the carrier settings:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad

Does the same issue occur when using a Bluetooth headset or using the speaker?

Keep me updated.

Cheers!
