How can I put a gmail icon in the dock? I use the "mail" for all my other mail, but I really need to keep this separate...and would like to add the Gmail icon to access and see notifications.

If you must keep it outside the default apple Mail app, you can either download a 3rd party mail app from the app store and add your gmail account to it, or simply add a bookmark to the gmail website to open in Safari or whatever your default browser is.
There is no actual Gmail App for Mac, as Google has not made one.
Otherwise, why not add the gmail account to the default Mail App?

Mail app is your Gmail access point.
