Is it possible to open the messages app and other apps like it in the front of the current window I have open? Like if I am currently on google chrome and click on the messages app, it opens a completely new window just for the messages and gets annoying when I have to switch back and forth to answer short messages.

Use Command-Tab:
No. But [Hold Down: command + Press: tab], and you could easy switch between the two apps.

Suggest this be an option. You can do so by providing it as feedback.

Don't have the apps opened on full screen mode. If you have any app open on full screen mode (clicking on the green circle so that it opens up and takes up the whole screen rather than being a smaller window) and you try to open up another app, it's going to exit the full screen and go to the other app. I hope I'm wording that right.
