My laptop has been shutting down when it goes to sleep

Saw this.... https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210615

HW: MBP 2017

Since about 2-3 Catalina updates ago - my laptop has been notoriously & pretty reliably shutting down when it goes to sleep or when the lid is closed.

The battery is usually full or at least well above 60% FWIW.

The load is often negligible.

Is anyone elses Macbook Pro's doing this? Looking to hear from non-2019 owners as well.

Nope.

Do you have any 3rd party kernel extensions installed?

Apparently, Apple has finally had enough with kernel extensions. The next update on Catalina is going to start notifying people who use them. (See https://developer.apple.com/support/kernel-extensions/. Hosts: that’s a public web page, so it should be OK.)

They are being replaced by something called “System Extensions”. They function very much like Kernel Extensions, but are much easier to use.

Users will still have to go through the “approval” process in System Preferences.

System Extensions can destabilize a machine too, but not as badly as kernel extensions. (I’ve only seen one System Extension in the wild and it is causing problems. I’ll let you guess what kind of app it is and who makes it 😄) In theory, System Extensions shouldn’t lead to panics like Kernel Extensions can.

System Extensions are much more tightly bound to a containing app. If a user drags an app to the trash, the bundled System Extension is automatically stopped and removed too. In theory, they could be part of Mac App Store apps too, but I doubt that will ever happen.
