Red notification button on mail icon on iPad air won't disappear after reading mail

I've suddenly experienced this issue: when new mail arrives, I get the usual red button notification with the number of new emails. But after reading those emails, the red button containing a number remains.

I’ve done a hard reset several times, but the issue persists. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, any idea how to resolve it?

thanks all!

Thanks for replying so quickly. As it happens, I DO have a second email, but it's contents are usually forwarded to my primary address, so i don't think to go directly to it. I now see that it does seem to be the cause of this issue. After reading your post, I went right to the second email address and found two messages that had not been forwarded. , Mystery solved. Thank you!
