Jumpdrive Ejection Issues

Hi,

I just got a new MacBook Pro 2019 (running Mojave) and I'm finding I'm having some issues when I eject my jump drive.

I'm using an external USB port to connect the jump drive. At the end of the day, I make sure all files are closed and then I eject it from the Finder. I get the following sequence of messages:

The problem is that I'm ejecting it from the Finder and there's no other way to eject it (that I can see). So I hit OK and this is what I get:

I know for a fact that this is NOT true because I make sure all the files from the drive are closed, so no program is using it. So I hit "Force Eject" and get this:

I hit "Force Eject" and get this final window:

The jump drive then disappears from my Finder like it should.

Oddly, this doesn't happen if I am working for a short time on a file on the jump drive and then eject it but when I'm working on files from the drive for a while and eject it at the end of the day, this happens.

I'm not losing any data or files that are on the jump drive because, as I said, I make sure all files from there are closed before I eject them. But it's annoying and I'm not sure if it's doing any damage to the jump drive or the computer by having to force eject it every time.

Is there another way to eject the jump drive that won't do this? Or is it just because I'm connecting the jump drive through a USB port that is connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port (as opposed to putting it into the USB port that is directly on the computer, as I did with my old 2012 MacBook)?

Thank you,

Rotem

Hello rotemmay,

Thanks for posting your question. As I understand it, you're having some issues ejecting an external drive and see an alert that files are in use.

From your screenshots, I see that the file type is for the Scrivener app, and it looks like that app is open on your Dock in the screenshots. Try quitting the Scrivener app entirely and then see if you can eject the external drive.

If that doesn't help, you might test ejecting the drive in Disk Utility to see if the same behavior occurs: Use external storage devices with Mac

Take care.

Hi StarrC,

Thank you for your response. I tried shutting down Scrivener and ejecting the drive, but I get the same message. I went to the Disc Utilities and tried ejecting the jumpdrive from there and it gave me a more detailed error message. It said that it was Google Chrome that was using the drive! I shut down my Chrome browser and the jumpdrive did indeed eject without any issues.

This seems to be pretty bizarre, though. I use no applications from the drive that need a web browser. So how could Google Chrome be using it?
